TUSCANY
Tuscany represents an olive growing region of excellence; local olive growers produce oil of great merit, yet very different in their styles. The introduction of the olive goes back, without a doubt, to the Etruscans as other rgions had abandoned olive growing after the fall of Imperial Rome, and the great olive groves were surviving only throught the grace of religious convents and abbeys. FOLLOWing the initiative by the Medici, especially Lorenzo The Magnificent, in which they made olive cultivation one of the principal resources of the region, they granted large extensions of forest land to communities, with the requirement of leasing to them
only if they would transform them into olive groves. The climate in Tuscany is particularly harsh in winter and not favorable for propagation, and even as recently as 1985 a heavy frost olive growing endangered olive growing.
Regional production is protected under an "ICP", which covers all of Tuscany and two DOP which are: "Chianti Classifco", and "Terre di Siena".
