The Marches, although not having extensive olive trees is situated between regions that produce extra virgin olive oil of great reknown. Characteristically and going back to ancient times, historic documents testify that during the time of Imperial Rome the region was well known for the quality of it's oil. During the Middle Ages the merchants of the Republic of Venice were selling oil from the Marches at prices higher than elsewhere. In the 1200's Marches ships had to pay a toll of nearly 25 pounds of oil when they approached the Po river, because their products were considered higher quality than the others.
Marches olive trees and their numerous varieties are well adapted for the climate in the region (very harsh in winter). The varieties most numerous are : "Raggiola, "Carboncella", "Rosciola"; other(varities less numerous are altre meno diffuse sono : "Leccino", "Frantoio", "Moraiolo", "Maurino", "Pendolino", "Laurina", "Lea", "Nebbia", "Sargano", "Mignola","Orbeana", "Coroncina", "Piantone di Mogliano", "piantone di Macerata" and "piantone di Falerone (very old)";
The provinces with the greatest production are Macerata and Ascoli Piceno, other important areas are: Cartoceto (PU) and Monte San Vito (AN). The only DOP olive oils is the "Cartoceto" one.
